With the recent news that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting, in addition to the baby, many fashionistas are eagerly anticipating the debut of what will undoubtedly be her chic maternity style. Long gone are the days of pregnant women hiding their tummies or being forced to wear frumpy ill-fitting garments. If you are pregnant this season, first of all, congratulations! While it may seem like it, you don’t have to purchase an entirely new wardrobe to accommodate your expanding middle. Here are a few items to put on your shopping list that will keep you looking stylish and comfortable through the next nine months.
Black leggings and straight-leg maternity jeans are a comfy staples that can help you look pulled together with a flat boot or ballet flat. A basic legging and blue jean will carry you through however, if your budget allows, feel free to have some fun with coloured denim and detailed leggings.
Pick up a handful of long stretchy tees and tank tops for layering under a variety of toppers both when you are expecting and immediately after. Most versatile will be those in black, white and grey.
Button Down Shirt
An upgrade to your tee shirt, the button down can stand alone or also be used for layering.
A Cozy Sweater
One of the layering pieces I referred to above is a cozy cardigan. Either a traditional cardi or waterfall version, when layered over a tee or button down, it will keep you warm and stylish. The benefit of a cardigan is that it also works in reverse, when you get a little hot under the collar, it can be easily removed for instant relief. Also great about the sweater is that it is not pregnancy specific and can therefore have a lifespan longer than 9 months.
Another layering piece to wear over everything, the blazer instantly upgrades an otherwise casual look. Another keeper for pregnancy and beyond.
Not interested in going through winter without being able to zip up your coat? Try a cape. Especially appropriate if you commute mostly by car, the cape can take you from home to work, dinner or the local shops.
A great option for work or dinner dates, a sweater dress will accommodate your bump while looking stylish and appropriate. Other universally flattering dress options include wrap dresses and cotton dresses with an empire waist.
