This Friday, July 27th, the Summer Olympics will erupt on the grand stage of London, England and wow millions of viewers with the greatest athletes our world has to offer. The usual questions revolve around their training and fitness routines (which we covered last week) but the fuel that powers those amazing feats is a well balanced diet. Oh really? Perhaps you thought they gorged themselves on high-calorie, high-fat diets? Not at all.

Strong Breakfast:
The first meal of the day is the most important meal of the day. Make yourself a well-rounded meal with a vegetable, fruit, protein and starch. Try an omelette with sautéed vegetables, cheese, yogurt, whole grain bread or crackers and a glass of orange juice.

Soak up the Calcium:
Whether it’s exercising outside to gather some Vitamin D, or consuming a glass of fat-free milk or bowl of greek yogurt, calcium plays a big part in a strong diet.
Healthy Snacks: When you think snacks, you probably dream of chips, but that snack won’t get you anywhere but back to the gym. Grab something with fiber and healthy sugars like a fruit or vegetable.

Water Works Wonders:
Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. Drink before, during and after exercise. Ideally, you want to consume eight 8oz glasses of water.

Recovery Meal:
If you’ve gone for a long swim, run or played in a recreational game, be sure to eat a high-protein recovery meal afterwards. Before exercising consume endurance sustaining carbs, but afterwards it’s all about the protein.

A Goodnight’s Sleep:
This might not be a food, but it is important to your health. A goodnight’s sleep is essential to staying on track with your diet and fitness routine.
