Trending Now – Spring Food Trends for 2019

Spring is in the air, and with the change of seasons comes a change in food trends. Many of the trending items this spring revolve around reducing waste, foods that come into season in the spring, and foods with overall health benefits. As you develop your spring meal plans and grocery shopping, use some of the resources below to help create delicious and healthy options.

Ugly Fruit and Vegetables
The fruits and vegetables we see in grocery stores have been selected to be on display due to their look in conforming to what consumers believe to be the color, shape, and size of the fruit or vegetables. In reality, much of the rejected food that doesn’t conform to this look is discarded before the market, creating a lot of food waste. Many companies have started selling these misfit fruits and vegetables to reduce overall waste. Look for these fruits and vegetables when you shop to help our environment and reduce waste. They will have the same taste and nutritional benefits and often the interesting shapes and sizes can bring an added element of fun into your food.

Kefir and Kombucha
Fermented beverages have many health benefits that include reducing bloating, great skin and helping overall gut health. Kefir and Kombucha are among the most popular fermented drinks and can help supercharge digestion by providing a source of good bacteria that will help improve intestinal tract functions. Kombucha is a fermented tea, and a popular choice to many people because it is low in calories and does not contain dairy for those opposed to lactose. Kefir can be compared to a tangy yogurt, containing good bacteria and yeast. Kefir also contains a high source of protein, vitamin-B, and tryptophan which can help fight stress.

Unusual Veggie Juice
This spring, juicing with the not so typical kale or spinach has taken over. Celery juice has been all the craze, with celebrities such as J-Lo speaking about the benefits. Celery juice provides anti-inflammatory benefits and is best consumed in the morning on an empty stomach. Celery juice helps strengthen bile, which is an important component in breaking down fats. It is also beneficial in eliminating waste from the body, and many juicers note a change in their bowel functions.

Cocktail Shots
If eating in moderation is something you are looking to improve on this spring, try serving cocktail shots at your next get together versus drinks or food in a large quantity. Cocktail shots provide drinks or appetizers within a small shot glass size. Shrimp cocktail, for example, can be served with a scoop of cocktail sauce in the glass, and 1-2 shrimp detailed on the outside of the glass. It is also a way to serve smaller quantities of alcohol, by making your favorite drink and only serving it in a small shot glass size.

Tahini is Taking Over
As someone with a nut allergy, I am always looking to alternatives for peanut treats or nut-based butter. Tahini is making an appearance in more than just hummus this spring. Tahini butter is appearing on grocery store shelves, and it is also being paired with chocolate for rich and flavorful desserts. Consider using Tahini instead of peanut butter to add to your favorite dessert treats, such as muffins, ice cream bars or cookies.
