Health and Fitness Trends for Summer 2019

We live in a time with continued research being done towards health, fitness, and nutrition, and are continually presented with new idea’s and tips when it comes to our health. I often find that the most impactful changes on my health come from the most simple idea’s that are easy to incorporate into my daily lifestyle. Here are some great and simple health benefits to begin incorporating this summer to make you feel great.

Turn off Technology
With the introduction of weekly screen time being available on smartphones, it has been an eye opener for myself and many people around me as to how much time we spend on our phones! Between texting, checking emails, social media accounts, monitoring fitness and nutrition apps, it can seem like a part-time job staying up to date. It is important to take a moment to self-reflect on the amount of time we use our phones, and if it is really necessary for our daily lives. Think about doing your own technology detox this summer to reduce the time spent on your phone. Whether you schedule specific times in the day to check emails and apps, set time limitations when on your phone, or delete any un-needed accounts that may not be needed, cleansing from technology helps us reconnect with ourselves and those around us.

Gut Health
The health of our digestive tract continues to be a trend for 2019. Researchers are now learning that our weight, immune system, and some disease risk factors are all connected to our gut health. Through improving gut health, we can balance hormones responsible for mood, sleep, hunger and stress and even help reduce the risk of some diseases. Remember to give your gut a break this summer. Cut back on highly processed foods, reduce stress and increase your consumption of gut-friendly fiber, protein and carbohydrates. Incorporate foods both rich in fiber and good for your gut such as raspberries, almonds, beans, sprouted grains, and apples. Below are some great recipes to get you started on improving gut health.

Reduce Inflammation 
Some researchers think foods such as gluten and dairy may be causing inflammation in the body and reducing the consumption or in some cases eliminating them, may make people feel better.  Try incorporating into your diet spices such as turmeric, cinnamon and rosemary, and foods such as ginger, walnuts, green tea, cacao, extra virgin olive oil, flax seeds, and walnuts to add some zest to your food and help reduce inflammation.

Resistance Bands
A simple and easy to use fitness trend for the summer is using resistance bands. These versatile and easy to use bands are perfect for people who work out at home or outdoors and are small and lightweight to pack in your bag when traveling.
